What is the STEPS Project
STEPS is a new research study at Loma Linda University that offers a FREE online 8-week intervention for parents of young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This study is a collaboration between Loma Linda University and Cal State Fullerton that was developed to provide parents with support and reduce parenting stress.
Parents who participate will be placed in either a mindfulness or parent education and support group. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, or MBSR, will teach parents both formal and informal mindfulness exercises that have been shown to help with stress reduction. The parent education and support group will provide information on raising a young child with ASD as well as provide a space for parents to support one another. We believe that these groups may help both you and your child.

What is involved?
The program is 8 weeks long and includes weekly, online sessions of either mindfulness or parent education. There will also be one weekend session during week 6. Based on your groups assignment, sessions will be held either on Monday or Wednesday nights. Because this is a research study, you will also be asked to complete some questionnaires about your family and your child with ASD as well as participate in virtual assessments. You will be compensated for your time and this information will be used to evaluate the quality of our program. One or both parents are welcome to participate in the intervention. If you choose to enroll in the program, it will be important for you to attend sessions each week in order to make sure the intervention works. This is an opportunity for you to learn information and strategies designed to help both you and your child.
